A destructive top-order batter, known by the nickname ‘Baby AB’, blessed with elite footwork against spin and 360-degree strokeplay, South Africa's Dewald Brevis shot to the limelight through his exploits in the ICC U19 World Cup 2022, which took place in the West Indies. Due to his uncanny resemblance with his idol 'AB de Villiers', Brevis had already become a social media sensational through his exploits in domestic T20s in South Africa, but it was at the World Cup where the teenager showcased that he was far and away the best talent among his age group.Brevis finished as the leading run-scorer in the WC, and as one would expect, an IPL contract soon came calling. He registered himself at a base price of INR 20 Lakhs but was eventually picked by the Mumbai Indians for INR 3 Crores. He showcased glimpses of his talent in the 7 games (161 runs @ a strike rate of 142.48), he played for MI in the season (IPL 2022) that ensued. Brevis was retained by the Mumbai Indians franchise at the same price (INR 3 crore) ahead of the 2023 IPL. However, the latest Proteas sensation, Brevis did not get a single chance to perform on the big stage (IPL 2023). He has also been retained in the 2024 IPL auction by the same franchise (Mumbai Indians). Therefore, he will be seen performing for the MI franchise in the 2024 IPL.
