The England cricket team is having a disastrous India tour with them losing the fourth Test match at the Wankhede Stadium by an innings and 36 runs. With this mammoth victory, India clinched the five-match series 3-0, with a game to play, and this naturally upset the visiting English fans.
Winning or losing is a part of the game, but English fans at the Wankhede did not take the loss very well as in an act of distasteful behaviour, they hijacked a fan messaging board to post sick jokes about well-known criminals like Adam Johnson and Josef Fritzl, as well as Madeleine McCann and many others.
The act has been attributed to the ‘Barmy Army’, which is a semi-organised group of English cricket fans who arrange touring parties for some of its members to follow the English cricket team on overseas tours. However, the name is also applied to followers of the team who join in with match day activities in the crowd, but do not necessarily travel as part of an organised tour.
One of the messages on the screen read:
So grateful for my parents to bring me to the Cricket! Great day so far :) - Madeleine McCann
Madeleine McCann was a child who disappeared during a family holiday to Portugal in 2007. Her whereabouts are still unknown.
Another obnoxious message came in the name of Elisabeth Fritzl, who was held captive inside a rape dungeon for 24 years by her father Josef Fritzl in an Austrian home.
“I came here in memory of my father Josef, who loved to watch cricket with me in the basement in our home country, Austria — Elisabeth Fritzl.
Furthermore, the English fans also tried making fun of footballer Adam Johnson, who was found guilty of pedophilic activity after he was found guilty of sexual activity with a 15-year-old.
“Lovely to see so many young cricket fans here today- Adam Johnson,”
The fans also took a jibe at controversial conservative politician Nigel Farage, who was a prominent BREXIT supporter.
“Great to see so many Indian faces...in India! C mon England!- Nigel Farage
It was a really bad display of character by the English cricket fans, something even worse than what their players did on the ground. Yes, sentiments run high if your team do not perform well, but letting emotions overflow in a such a manner is surely a matter of shame for everyone in the fraternity.
Images of the messages were Tweeted by a handle @CFCJD which read, England taking a piss at cricket in India.
