The World is yet to come to terms with the shock and horror of the terrorist attacks that rocked the French capital city of Paris on November 13 and voices of support have been pouring in ever since that fateful day. Political leaders all over the world condemned the attacks and vowed to step up the war against terror while leading personalities from various spheres, including sportspersons, pulled their weight behind Paris.

One of the most notable ways in which the world expressed solidarity with the victims was in the manner in which some of the most iconic monuments over the world like the Sydney Opera House in Australia, “Christ the Redeemer” statue in Brazil and the Empire State Building in the US, to name a few, lit up in blue, white and red, the colours of the French flag.

The sporting world also expressed its support with the Wembley stadium in England similarly lit up on the night after the attacks and joining in with the tributes now is India’s iconic cricket stadium Eden Gardens, located in Kolkata, the capital city of the state of West Bengal, as the stadia exterior was lit up with the three colours representing the French flag.

Sport has acted as a major unifier in times of distress like this one and the move by Eden Gardens has been welcomed with open arms by the social media followers after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted a picture of the same on its official Twitter handle.

The ground may have come in for much criticism after a T20 international scheduled to be held between India and South Africa was called off without a ball being bowled due to a wet outfield despite rains ceasing plenty of hours before the match was set to start. This move, however, is sure to spread positive vibes about one of the most famous sporting venues in India.
