The performance by the Bangladesh team against England in the first Test was one of frustrating highs and lows. The Bangladesh team were not in the frame of the game till the end of the first innings as they conceded the follow on.
Trailing by 223 runs, Tamim Iqbal (“allegedly” the Virender Sehwag of Bangladesh) came out firing against a potent English attack to crack a stunning ton of just 100 balls. But like all good batsmen in minnow teams, the excitement of a century at Lord’s got the better of him.
The Bangladeshi top order followed Tamim’s impressive innings with reasonably solid scores. Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique and Jahurul Islam scored 75, 74 and 46 respectively. Even after this strong foundation was laid, the Bangladesh team failed to capitalize as their lower middle order could not sustain the momentum. They lost their last five wickets for a meager sum. Bangladesh managed just 382 in their second innings. And hence what could have been a humdinger of a match for the Bangladesh team at the mecca of cricket turned out to a bogus. England came out to chase 163 against a weak Bangladeshi bowling attack and made quick work of it.
Earlier England’s James Trott played a marathon innings of 226 to help England secure a mammoth score of 505. Captain Andrew Strauss came good in both innings with 83 and 82 respectively in the two innings. Tamim Iqbal again was Bangladesh’s lone hope in the first innings with a half century.
The English Bowling looked impressive with James Anderson and inn damaging the Bangladeshi batting. However, it was Finn’s spell in the second innings that turned out to be a match saver for England and earned him a man of the match.
