John Reid, who had been a Match referee between 1993 and 2002, has revealed that he has been battling bowel cancer which has forced him to shift to Auckland from Taupo.
Reid revealed during a recent interview that he had suffered a mild stroke recently which had forced him to shift. Talking about being in a positive frame of mind while dealing with the issue he said: “It’s manageable, my doctor says. I’ve got lots of faith in my doctors. It’s a little battle I’ve got to put up with now.”
Reid made his debut against England in 1949 at Manchester. He went to to play 58 Tests and scored 3,428 runs including six centuries in the period.
In a Test match at Christchurch against England in March 1963, Reid scored a hundred in his team’s paltry score of 159. This still remains as the record for the lowest innings score by a team with a hundred in it.
Reid retired in 1965, then served as a selector and also had a brief stint of coaching in South Africa.
