The Welsh Fire franchise retained captain Tammy Beaumont for the 2024 edition of The Hundred Women's following their playoffs-finish last year. After securing unwanted cellar-dwellers tag twice in the first two editions, the Beaumont-led Welsh Fire punched above their weight to finish third on the 2023 points table.
Subsequently qualifying for the playoffs, Fire’s aspirations were only dashed by a rain-marred Eliminator in London, granting a safe passage for the finale to a higher-seeded Northern Superchargers.
Regardless, Welsh Fire’s ascension prompted the franchise owners to make several retentions during the player-retention window of 2024 in late February. Apart from retaining senior English batter and franchise captain Tammy Beaumont, the owners and the team management brought back seven other players, including West Indies' all-round behemoth Hayley Matthews.
Alongside Matthews, the retentions only included one other overseas star, none other than legendary South African fast bowler Shabnim Ismail. Primary all-rounders Sophia Dunkley and Georgia Elwiss, wicketkeeper Sarah Bryce, fast bowler Freya Davies, and all-round apparent Emily Windsor were among the other retentions made by the franchise to preserve Welsh Fire’s local English talent pool.
During the auction, the franchise added Australian left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen to its 2024 player regiment. Jonassen’s inclusion can be justified owing to her decade-long international experience for Australia, featuring over 100 matches and five T20 World Cup wins. Jonassen’s Welsh Fire 2024 contract will also mark her debut in The Hundred, subsequently adding ECB’s premier 100-ball competition to her ever-expanding T20 career profile.
Top-order batters Phoebe Franklin and Ella McCaughan, off-spinners Claire Nicholas and Georgia Davis, fast bowler Kate Coppack, and all-rounder Alex Griffiths were also added to Welsh Fire’s 2024 playing group outside the retention window.
