Geoff Marsh considered for Sri Lanka's coaching job

Geoff Marsh might walk into the Sri Lankan dressing room as a coach soon.

His son ( Shaun Marsh ) might have announced a dream start to his career with a century on his debut, but this has not dwindled Geoff Marsh’s possibility of walking into the Sri Lankan dressing room as a coach, according to sources.

Sri Lanka’s performance especially in tests has been sagging ever since the retirement of spin-legend Muthiah Muralitharan from tests, last year. Though they did well in the World Cup in the subcontinent, it was doubted if their acquaintance about the local conditions might have played a key role in their march to the finals.

As if reiterating the statement, Sri Lanka had a poor outing in England in June and their performance against Australia at home has shocked many. They were trounced in a minefield-like pitch at Galle and are in the course of suffering another defeat with rain – the only possible savior, at Pallekele.

Desperate to get back to winning ways, Sri Lankan board has fastened the process of finding a permanent coach for the team, sources said.

Trevor Bayliss coached the team until 2011 World Cup. Sri Lanka has since been under the service of interim coaches. Bayliss’ assistant Stuart Law coached them in England while the former Sri Lanka fast bowler Rumesh Ratnayake in this series against Australia.

Former South Africa coach Graham Ford and Geoff’s former Australian team-mate Tom Moody are also considered for the job though the former ruled that out, it is understood.

“They had a word but nothing’s come of it. I’m here totally focused on the Test match, but they’ve had a word to quite a few people,” Geoff said.

Geoff who has also worked coached Australia for four years and has also coached Zimbabwe added that, “Definitely nothing formal, no. I may consider it but we’ll just see how things go. You’ve got the IPL and all that to take into consideration, a lot of things, there’s my job back at home. So they’ve spoken to Tom Moody and a whole heap of people, so we’ll see how that all pans out.”

Geoff Marsh played 50 Tests for Australia and is right now with the Pune Warriors in the Indian Premier League.
