With the ICC ODI World Cup scheduled to start from February 14 in Australia and New Zealand, Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell has named his all-time ODI World XI. Appearing in a Cricket Australia video blog, the 26-year-old picked the following players in his team of world-beaters:
Adam Gilchrist, Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara, Dean Jones, Viv Richards, Jacques Kallis, Wasim Akram, Shane Warne, Waqar Younis, Glenn McGrath.
5 of the 11 players are from Australia, while West Indies and Pakistan have 2 players each. India’s Sachin Tendulkar and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis complete the squad.
What is surprising to see is that Richards, one of the greatest top order players the game has ever seen, is at No. 6 and Kallis, miles ahead of his fellow modern day all-rounders, is at No. 7. While Richards could still have dominated from that position, he is far too good a batsman to be wasted that low down the order. And given Kallis’s playing style, he would likely have been a misfit as a finisher.
But these are Maxwell’s picks, so we can’t argue!
Earlier this week, Maxwell was chosen as Australia’s best T20 player of the year 2014 at the Allan Border Medal ceremony.
