Without a shadow of a doubt the best opening batsman India has ever produced, Sunil Gavaskar shouldered the burden of Indian batting for many years.
He scored runs all around the world which is a hallmark of a great batsman. Gavaskar retired with a record 34 centuries, this record stood for many years even after his retirement.
Gavaskar was particularly efficient against fast bowling and he played some of the greatest fast bowlers like Lillee, Marshall, Imran, Hadlee and Botham, during his test stint.
During 1979 English tour (scoreline of the series was 0-1), Gavaskar scored 542 runs in 7 innings at an average of 77.42 with 1 century.
