The legendary Virat Kohli holds the record for the record for hammering the most number of runs in the history of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Having featured in five T20 WC editions since 2012, the Indian run-machine has constantly pushed the envelope with the bat, especially in run-chases, to spearhead his team.
Kohli won the Player of the Tournament in the 2014 and 2016 editions of the World Cup— the only cricketer to win two Player of the Series awards in the showpiece event’s history.
The former Indian skipper was also the leading run-scorer in the previous edition held in Australia, where India finished as the semi-finalists. His campaign included arguably the greatest-ever T20I knock, the astounding 82* in front of 90,000+ fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) against arch-rivals Pakistan, which propelled India to an unlikely victory.
Overall, the 35-year-old has smashed 1141 runs in just 27 matches @ 81.5/139.3 with the help of 14 50s.
The next spot belongs to former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene, who racked up 1016 runs in 33 matches @ 39.07/134.74 with 7 50+scores, including one hundred. Another Sri Lankan in the top five is former opener T Dilshan, who dominated the 2009 event in England.
The right-handed opener hammered 897 runs in 35 matches @ 30.93/124.06, and he is at the fifth spot in the coveted list.
The third and fourth positions are held by “Universe Boss” Chris Gayle and current Indian captain Rohit Sharma respectively. While Gayle, who is also the first-ever centurion in T20 WC history, scored 965 runs @ 34.46/142.75 with 9 50+ scores, including a couple of hundreds, Sharma has managed 963 runs @ 34.39/127.88 with 9 50s.
