Highest team totals in Pakistan vs England Tests

The England cricket team's batters broke all sorts of records during the 2nd innings of the Multan Test against Pakistan, with as many as two of their batters forming nearly a 500-run partnership. The visitors, courtesy of magical knocks from Harry Brook (317 off 322) and Joe Root (262 off 375), scripted a famous victory by an innings against hosts Pakistan who had piled up 556 runs on board in the first innings. England declared on 823 for the loss of 7 wickets. However, Pakistan faltered to trail and lost the match by an innings and 47 runs. In the process, England’s 823/ 7 is now the highest score between the two nations in Tests, surpassing the 708 by Pakistan against England at The Oval on August 6, 1987. This is also now the third-highest total in Test matches for England, leapfrogging the total of 710/7 (D) against India in Birmingham. This is also the first time that England posted in excess of 800 against Pakistan.

Their previous best was 657, which they achieved in Rawalpindi back in 2022. Pakistan, on the other hand, have posted 600+ totals against England as many as 5 times, which also includes a 700+ score (708)- at the Oval in 1987. The first instance of Pakistan breaching the 600-run mark against England came in the year 1971, when they hammered 608/7 (D) at Edgbaston. Pakistan came close to overhauling it in 1974, when they smashed 600/7 at the Oval before eventually declaring. England, on the other hand, held the record for the highest total in Tests between the two nations for 17 years between 1954-1971. The 'Three Lions' first breached the 500-run mark in Tests against Pakistan in Nottingham in 1954 in a game they won by an innings & 129 runs. England came close to overhauling the 609-mark on several occasions like in Abu Dhabi 2015 (598/7 D), Manchester 2016 (588/8 D), Southampton 2020 (583/7 D), but it was eventually on December 01, 2022, that they were able to cross the threshold.
