How is Net Run Rate (NRR) Calculated?

Net Run Rate (NRR) has become the preferred method of breaking ties in multi-team one-day international tournaments. It is often misunderstood, but really quite simple to understand.

A team's net run rate is calculated by deducting from the average runs per over scored by that team throughout the competition, the average runs per over scored against that team throughout the competition.

Net Run Rate is the most preferred method in case of breaking ties in T20 and ODI group stages.

Effectively NRR Formula = (Average runs scored per over by the team throughout the tournament) - (Average runs scored per over by the opposing teams against it).

or

NRR = ((Total runs scored by team)/(Total overs played by team)) - ((Total runs scored against team)/(Total overs played against team))

Total runs = Total score a batting team has scored against the bowling team in the whole tournament

Total overs -> Total overs played by the batting team and bowled by the bowling team.

However:

  • If a team is all out within the stipulated 20 overs, then the overs considered for NRR calculation is 20 itself and not the actual overs played.
  • If a team chases down a target before 20 overs, then the actual overs is considered for NRR calculation.

Net Run Rate for a Forfeited Match or Abandoned Match?

Rule 16.10.2 of the ICC Men's ODI Playing Conditions states the following:

Only those matches where results are achieved will count for the purpose of net run rate calculations. Where a match is abandoned, but a result is achieved under Duckworth/Lewis/ Stern, for net run rate purposes Team 1 will be credited with Team 2’s Par Score on abandonment off the same number of overs faced by Team 2.Where a match is concluded with Duckworth/Lewis/Stern having been applied at an earlier point in the match, Team 1 will be credited with 1 run less than the final Target Score for Team 2 off the total number of overs allocated to Team 2 to reach the target.
