India had endured a mixed time in the three-nation series Down Under and had to win their last game against Sri Lanka at Hobart in under 40 overs if they were to chase.
Batting first, the Lankans notched up 319 runs with hundreds from T Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara.
India began their chase optimistically, with Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag leading the way, but it really was the stand between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli that helped them remain in contention.
Gambhir fell for 63, but Kohli carried on and along with Suresh Raina took India home with just under three overs left, finishing unbeaten on 133 off just 86 balls and ensuring his side remained in the competition.
