Sri Lanka have announced their list of probables, consisting of 30 players, for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. They have confirmed that Angelo Mathews will captain the team at the event.
With this likely to be the last World Cup for veterans Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Lasith Malinga and Tillakaratne Dilshan, the Sri Lankan board has made it a point to mix youth and exuberance with some experienced names.
The Islanders are known for bringing in a surprise element in major tournaments, be it in the form of Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana in the 1996 World Cup which they won, or using unorthodox bowlers like Lasith Malinga and Ajantha Mendis, who helped them reach the last two finals. This time around, they have Lakshan Sandakan, a chinaman bowler and Tharindu Kaushal, an offspinner, who are yet to make their international debut.
Even Farveez Maharoof and Nuwan Pradeep find themselves in the squad, both of whom last played an One-Day International for the country in 2012. Sachithra Senanayaka, who is currently suspended from bowling in international cricket due to an illegal bowling action, also finds himself in the initial list.
