Former Pakistani captain and a big name in the cricketing circles, Imran Khan claimed that Javed Miandad, his former teammate once wanted to kill an Indian umpire in Bengaluru. Imran also revealed that it was he who saved the Indian umpire’s life on several occasions.
The cricketer turned politician made these statements while addressing a rally in Karachi on Tuesday. “Javed Miandad wanted to kill an Indian umpire in Bangalore but I saved the umpire from Javed again and again,” Imran said.
The legend reportedly gave the example of Miandad to underscore the fact that all muhajir ( those who left India and settled in Pakistan during partition) are not like Muttahida Qaumi Movement ( MQM) chief Altaf Hussain, who severely criticized Pakistan very recently.
Advising the Pakistani people not to doubt the patriotism of Urdu speaking muhajirs, Imran said, “Javed Miandad was also a muhajir but he always stood by me. Whenever I got into trouble, Miandad would step up. He was one of the biggest patriots I have seen.”
“Muhajirs do not need to prove their patriotism. Imran Khan will always stand by Muhajirs. I want to give Muhajirs a message today. You don’t need to tell anyone how patriotic you are. The bloodshed of partition affected so many families. Those people gave sacrifices and respected Pakistan,” he added.
Considered one of the most inspiring captains of all time, Imran Khan led his country to their 1st ever World Cup title in 1992. He handled his troops well and his teammates had a huge amount of respect for the all-rounder. He retired in 1988, but owing to public demand, he was requested by the then president of Pakistan Zia-ul-Haq to reconsider his retirement and captain the national side in the 1992 World Cup.
Miandad, on the other hand, was one of the greatest batsmen of Pakistan, but was a controversial character in the team. He was involved in many instances of on-field banter with the opposition players and was always in the limelight either due to his bat, or his mouth. Miandad smashed a big six of Chetan Sharma in the last ball of the Austral-Asia Cup final to win the match for Pakistan in dramatic fashion. Javed’s son Junaid Miandad is married to Dawood Ibrahim’s daughter Mahruk Ibrahim.
