Team India endured a difficult Boxing Day Test in front of a packed Melbourne Cricket Ground as Australia thrashed them by 184 runs on December 30, 2024. With the win, the hosts took a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
After India conceded a big first-innings lead, they fought back decently in the second essay to give themselves an outside chance of saving the game. However, the wheels came off in the second and third sessions on Day 5. Most Indian players failed to deliver in the fourth Test.
On that note, here are three players who starred and two who flopped in the fourth Test between India and Australia.
#5 Star - Nitish Kumar Reddy
Nitish Kumar Reddy's selection was under question heading into the Boxing Day Test, but he came up with a sensational batting display. The young all-rounder first-innings century helped India get closer to the Aussie total and prevented them from losing the contest early.
Reddy played sumptuous strokes on both sides of the wicket and was assured in defense. He also smartly negotiated a short-ball barrage from Pat Cummins, with his partnership with Washington Sundar taking India closer to parity.
Despite failing in the second innings, Reddy gave a good account of himself and showed great character.
#4 Flop - Rohit Sharma
India's captain moved himself back up to the top of the order, but his fortunes didn't change. Rohit Sharma fell cheaply in both innings, with both his dismissals leaving a lot to be desired.
Rohit attempted a half-hearted pull in the first innings before trying to flick across the line as India desperately fought to save the Test. There are serious questions over his place in the side, with his captaincy being significantly under par as well.
#3 Star - Jasprit Bumrah
The world's #1 Test bowler distanced himself further from his peers in Melbourne. Jasprit Bumrah, barring a brief period where Sam Konstas got the better of him, was absolutely magical for India.
Bumrah's wicket burst in the first innings, which included the scalps of Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh, brought India back into the game. He was at his incredible best in the second essay as well, threatening to take a wicket with nearly every delivery despite dealing with a taxing workload.
Bumrah finished the Test with nine scalps to his name, and even that wasn't reflective of how well he bowled.
#2 Flop - Virat Kohli
Another one of India's senior batters failed to deliver at the MCG. Virat Kohli hung around for a bit in the first innings, but on the whole, it was a hugely disappointing display.
Kohli once again pushed away from his body off Scott Boland to be sent back in the first essay. Before that, the veteran had needlessly barged into debutant Konstas, earning himself a fine and a demerit point.
Things got worse on Day 5. In the last over before Lunch, with India trying to salvage the game, Kohli drove far away from his body in an extremely rash shot to nick off for the umpteenth time. His days seem to be numbered.
#1 Star - Yashasvi Jaiswal
One of the highlights of India's series so far has been the way Yashasvi Jaiswal has adapted to Australian conditions. The left-hander gritted out twin 80s in the Melbourne Test, and while both his dismissals were wholly avoidable, he did his job for the visitors.
Jaiswal spent more than 500 minutes at the crease across both innings, keeping the batting afloat as wickets tumbled at the other end. He was loose on the drive at times, but for the most part, he curbed his instincts and played well off the back foot. India have a generational player on their hands.
