England folded up for 102 in the second innings of the Mumbai Test in 1981. They were set 241 for victory but the batting collapsed and the English innings lasted merely 26.2 overs. Kapil Dev (5 for 70) and Madan Lal (5 for 23) ran through the England line-up as only Ian Botham (29) and David Gower (20) got into the 20s.

India batted first in the Test and folded up for 179 as Botham and Graham Dilley claimed four scalps each. The hosts fought back courtesy left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi’s 5 for 40 as England were restricted to 166. India responded with 227 in their second innings to give the bowlers enough to thump England.

The Englishmen were also all-out for 102 in the first innings of the 1986 Headingley Test. Replying to India’s first-innings score of 272, England were all-out after just passing three figures, in 45.1 overs. Roger Binny was the wrecker-in-chief with 5 for 40. India eased themselves to a dominating win as England collapsed to 128 in the second innings as well.

Bhagwath Chandrasekhar

This was a historic occasion as India registered their first Test win, as well as series win, in England. Legendary leggie Bhagwath Chandrasekhar ran through England’s batting in their second innings to finish with figures of 6 for 38.

Chandrasekhar got the better of key England batsmen Brian Luckhurst (33), John Edrich (0) and Keith Fletcher (0) as the hosts’ batting lasted all of 45.1 overs. The other spinner, Srinivas Venkataraghavan, also claimed 2 for 44.

England were actually ahead in the game after the first innings. They put up an impressive 355 batting first and then restricted India to 284. Chandrasekhar’s spell, however, turned the match on its head. Following England’s stunning collapse, India needed 173 to create history. They got home by four wickets as captain Ajit Wadekar (45), Dilip Sardesai (40), Gundappa Viswanath (33) and Farokh Engineer (28 not out) all chipped in.

#1 81 in Ahmedabad (2021)

Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin

While England crumbled to 112 in the first innings of the Day-Night Test in Ahmedabad earlier this year, they fared ever worse in the second. England were bowled out for 81 in 30.4 overs. Axar Patel (5 for 32) and Ravichandran Ashwin (48) again tormented the England batsmen. Ben Stokes was their top-scorer with 25.

After England’s first innings disaster, captain Joe Root brought them back into the game by claiming sensational figures of 5 for 8 in 6.2 overs. Rohit Sharma made a fluent 66 for India while Virat Kohli contributed 27 before Root ran through the lower-order as the hosts were all-out for 145.

Indian spinners, however, ensured that the small lead the hosts gained did not go in vain, trampling England in their second innings. Following England’s second-innings collapse, India only needed 49 to win and cantered home by 10 wickets.
