Varun Aaron brought down the curtains on his international career on Friday (January 10). Arguably the fastest Indian pacer for most of the last decade, Aaron played his final competitive game for Jharkhand against Goa on January 5 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he finished with figures of 2/29 in six overs.
The right-arm pacer played nine Tests and as many ODIs and scalped 29 wickets. Besides, he represented five teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL), picking up 44 wickets in 52 appearances.
Aaron made his international debut against England at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in October 2011. The visitors batted first and were bundled out for 220, with Aaron emerging as the finest bowler for India with figures of 3/24. In response, Virat Kohli (86*) led the charge as the hosts chased down the total with more than nine overs to spare.
On that note, let's look at what Varun Aaron's teammates from this game are up to in their lives now.
Top-order: Parthiv Patel, Ajinkya Rahane, Gautam Gambhir
Parthiv Patel was clean bowled by Steven Finn in this game for 8 off 20. The southpaw currently works as an analyst and commentator for various media houses. He will serve as the assistant and batting coach of Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025.
Ajinkya Rahane had a fine start but was dismissed for 20 off 37. Rahane is a senior player for the Mumbai side in domestic cricket after his international snub. He will be seen representing Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2025.
Finn breached the defense of Gautam Gambhir, who could only score 1 off 6 in the game. Gambhir worked as the mentor for the title-winning KKR side in IPL 2024 and was appointed as the Indian team's head coach in July 2024.
Middle-order: Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Ravindra Jadeja
Coming to the crease at 46/3, Virat Kohli played a gritty knock of 86* off 99 to help the Indian side chase down the score in less than 41 overs. Kohli retired from the shortest format in 2024 after a title-winning run in the T20 World Cup. However, he is still a part of the Indian ODI and Test sides.
Suresh Raina slammed 80 off 62 balls, before being bowled by Finn. He stitched a match-winning 131-run stand with Kohli to set up the chase. Raina currently works as a commentator and analyst and also takes part in cricket tournaments dedicated to former cricketers.
Captain MS Dhoni remained unbeaten on 15 off 18 in this game. Dhoni will be seen representing the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2025.
Bowlers: Ravichandran Ashwin, Vinay Kumar, Praveen Kumar, Varun Aaron
The right-arm spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin finished with figures of 3/38 off 10 overs. Ashwin announced his shocking retirement in December 2024, with his last test appearance coming against Australia in Adelaide.
Vinay Kumar conceded 41 runs and took a solitary wicket in seven overs. The right-arm pacer recently worked as a commentator for Star Sports in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Praveen Kumar ended the game with figures of 1/41 off seven overs. He was announced as the chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association selection committee in October 2024.
Varun Aaron breathed fire in his debut game, finishing with figures of 3/24 in 6.1 overs, including a maiden. He took the wickets of Tim Bresnan, Scott Borthwick, and Tim Meaker. He will possibly don the analyst role for media houses in the near future.
