India registered a 5-0 whitewash against Sri Lanka when they won the fifth and final ODI on Sunday at Ranchi. It was their 100th win across all formats against the islanders.
India have beaten Sri Lanka on 14 occasions in Tests, 3 times in T20Is and on 83 occasions in ODIs. For the visitors, however, a first bilateral ODI series win on Indian soil continues to elude them. They first played India in India in 1982 in a 2-match ODI series which India won 2-0.
Despite having had some great players over the years, they have not managed to win on Indian soil.
This is the first time that India have achieved this feat (winning 100 matches) against any opposition in world cricket.
Their next best tally is against England, whom they have defeated on 74 occasions. One of the reasons as to why India have been so dominant over the Sri Lankans could be the amount of limited-overs cricket that they have played against them.
The two teams have faced off in 190 matches overall, but crucially have played against each other 37 times in the 50-over format and 6 times in the T20 format in the last 5 years.
