The Indian team suffered a tough loss in the fifth Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 in Sydney. Australia won the game by six wickets and also claimed the series 3-1.
While they lost a Test in Sydney this time around, they managed to draw the last two times they played at the venue. In 2020-21, India drew the Sydney Test. They also drew the Sydney Test during the 2014-15 tour and in 2018-19.
During the game in 2014-15, Australia put up a massive first-innings total of 572/7 declared. In response, the visitors put up a spirited effort, getting to 475. In the second innings, the hosts declared after getting to 251/6, setting the visitors a stiff 349-run target.
India managed to get to 252/7 before both teams shook hands and the Test ended in a draw. Let us take a look at who were a part of the playing XI for the visitors from that game and where they are now.
India's playing 11 from the 2014-15 Sydney Test - where are they now?
Openers - Murali Vijay and KL Rahul
Murali Vijay and KL Rahul opened for India in the 4th Test in Sydney in 2014-15. Vijay was dismissed for a duck in the first innings. However, the right-hander redeemed himself by scoring 80 runs off 165 balls in the second innings. His partner Rahul smashed a brilliant ton, scoring 110 runs in the first innings.
Murali Vijay has retired from cricket and is seen occasionally doing commentary at present. On the other hand, KL Rahul is still a part of the Indian set-up in all three formats. He was among their top scorers in the BGT 2024-25 series as well.
Middle order - Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli (c), Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, and Wriddhiman Saha (wk)
Rohit Sharma scored 53 and 39 runs in both innings of the 2014-15 Test. Virat Kohli, who led the team in that game, slammed a century (147) in the first innings and 46 in the second.
Ajinkya Rahane scored a crucial 38 not out in the second innings while Suresh Raina was dismissed for a duck in both the innings and had a horrible game. Wriddhiman Saha was the wicketkeeper, scoring 35 runs in the first innings and a duck in the second.
Rohit led India in three Tests of the BGT 2024-25 series. He retired from T20Is after the T20 World Cup 2024. However, he still plays Test and ODI cricket for the country. Virat also retired from T20Is and is a part of the Test and ODI side.
Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane has been out of the Test team for a while now. However, the batter continues to play domestic cricket for Mumbai and is set to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.
Suresh Raina retired from international cricket. The left-hander can be seen playing in various leagues and occasionally commentating as well. As for Saha, the wicketkeeper has announced that he will retire after completing the ongoing Ranji Trophy season.
All-rounders - Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin was the lone frontline spinner and all-rounder in the side. He picked up five wickets in the match, including four in the second innings. The right-handed batter also scored a crucial half-century (50) in the first innings.
Ashwin recently announced his retirement from international cricket after the third Test between India and Australia in Brisbane. However, he will continue playing club cricket and will also feature for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025.

Shami bagged five wickets in the first innings and picked up one more in the second. Umesh Yadav managed to bag just a solitary wicket in the Test.
Bhuvneshwar is not a part of the Indian team at the moment but regularly plays domestic cricket. He is also set to play for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2025.
Shami has been battling injury and fitness concerns, which have kept him out of the national side in recent times. He missed out on the BGT 2024-25 series but was seen participating in domestic cricket during the time. Shami is also playing the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy and will play for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2025.
Pacer Umesh Yadav has been out of the national set-up as well in recent times. He was last seen playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in November 2024. Umesh was unsold during the IPL 2025 mega-auction.
