Kapil Dev is widely regarded as a cricketing legend and was rightly named India's Cricketer of the Century by Wisden. Known for his World Cup 1983 exploits, he has won many awards in his star-studded career. Incidentally, he won the Man of the Match award in Sachin's debut game for his stellar and match saving performances. He scored 55 runs in the only innings in which he batted and took 4 wickets in the 1st innings and 3 in the 2nd. He retired from all forms of cricket in 1994 having scored 5248 runs from 131 Tests and 3783 from 225 ODIs. With the ball, he has picked up a whopping 431 wickets in Tests and 253 wickets in ODIs.

Post retirement, he was appointed as Head Coach of Indian National Team in 1999 but was unsuccessful and resigned after the match fixing controversy took place. He was nominated as the Chairman of the National Cricket Academy in 2006 but was removed in 2007 due to his involvement in a tournament known as the Indian Cricket League(ICL) which failed to take off. He came back to good terms with the BCCI and appears on many cricketing shows giving experts' opinion.
