#2 Is Karthik the answer to India's finisher conundrum?
Dinesh Karthik was another batsman who had a phenomenal IPL. He took on two new roles of leading the side as well as batting in the lower middle order, and he did both of them admirably well. He has been in and out of the Indian team for many years and has always made his way back into the side by scoring a truckload of runs in domestic cricket. This time was no different.
The thing that has worked in his favor is his batting position. Earlier, he was a top-order batsman and the moment he failed there were many others to claim that position whereas India has limited supply of capable finishers so he has a longer leash this time around.
In the Nidahas Trophy, he was made the finisher as the management had no other option with Dhoni and Pandya unavailable and he showed his capabilities in the final. He took on the responsibility of finishing the game for KKR in IPL 2018 and scored at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 150. He scored 472 out of 498 of his runs in the IPL batting lower than No.4 and he did an extraordinary job as a finisher.
MS Dhoni has time and again expressed his desire of batting at a higher position. But he just had an extraordinary IPL in which he scored at an average of 75 and a strike rate of 150. The way Dhoni has rewound the clock and Karthik's form would give the team management a happy headache for the finisher's job (No.6).
