Champions Trophy 2017 – Semi Finals
With rain washing out two games in Group A, Bangladesh had to register just a win to get to the Champions Trophy 2017 semi-finals. And they got a win over New Zealand by a margin of 5 wickets to qualify for the semi-finals. India, on the other hand, had won two and lost a game in Group B to make it to the semi-final stage.
Unlike the Quarter Final game in WC 2015, India won the toss and opted to field first in this game. Half centuries each from their opener Tamim Iqbal and wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim motored Bangladesh to a respectable total on the board – 264 for 7 in 50 overs. India, in reply, chased down the target with 9.5 overs to spare and 9 wickets in hand.
Shikhar Dhawan scored 34-ball 46 and was the only batsman to depart in India’s innings. Rohit Sharma (123* off 129 balls) and Virat Kohli (96* off 78 balls) batted brilliantly and completed the chase helping India win the semi-final. Kohli (175 innings) in this game against Bangladesh became the fastest player (by innings) to get to 8000 ODI career runs, the record which is yet to be broken.
