Team India has beaten their English counterparts twice in four encounters in the T20 World Cup. They did so for the first time in the inaugural edition, lost against them in the 2009 tournament by a thin margin and managed to beat them by a hefty margin in 2012.

Their last meeting with the Three Lions proved to be a disastrous one as the Jos Buttler-led unit crushed the Men in Blue in the semi-final of the 2022 T20 WC by ten wickets. England later went on to win the title by beating Pakistan in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
IND vs ENG T20 World Cup - 2022
After a gap of ten years, India and England met again in a T20 World Cup game. This time, the stakes were higher than ever. This was the first time that these two sides locked horns in a knockout fixture of the marquee event.
England won the toss and captain Jos Buttler had no hesitation in inviting the Indians to bat first. The tone for India’s eventual ten-wicket mauling was set in the powerplay itself as the opening duo of Rohit Sharma (27 off 28) and KL Rahul (5 off 5) failed to capitalise on the fielding restrictions.
While KL was dismissed cheaply, Rohit failed to get any sort of momentum into his innings. He was eventually dismissed for a pain-staking 27 (28), and when India’s superstar Suryakumar Yadav fell to Adil Rashid for a 10-ball 14, it meant that once again the onus fell on Virat Kohli to work his magic.
However, Virat failed to execute his tried-and-tested template this time around, as he fell to Chris Jordan for a 40-ball 50 in the 18th over. Hardik Pandya’s blistering 33-ball 63 took India to 168/6.
However, on a ground with short square boundaries and a pristine batting surface, it was always going to be an uphill task for the Indians to defend the total.
The only chance India really had was if Bhuvneshwar Kumar worked his magic again on opener Jos Buttler and the English top-order. But that was not to be. After months of getting dismissed by Bhuvi, the English captain fought back on the grandest stage of them all, as he messed up the right-arm seamer’s line-and-length by marking his guard a few steps ahead of the popping crease. To counter this, Rohit Sharma brought the keeper closer to the stumps, which was exactly what Buttler and England had hoped for.
From there on, it was a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if,’ as English openers smashed the Indian attack to all corners of the Adelaide Oval. Buttler finished at an unbeaten 49-ball 80, whilebAkex Hales racked up a brilliant 47-ball 86, as England romped home by ten wickets.
IND vs ENG T20 World Cup - 2012
England decided to field first on a batting track at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Gautam Gambhir walked out with Irfan Pathan and scored 45 runs off 38 deliveries and set the tone up for the rest of the side. Virat Kohli shared a 57-run partnership with him during his knock of 40 off 32. The duo’s performances were overshadowed by a quickfire 55 not out off 33 balls which included the only six of that innings. Team India finished with 170/4 on the board.
England lost two wickets pretty early to Irfan Pathan and then the spinners took over. Harbhajan Singh and Piyush Chawla bowled two and maidens respectively. The former was awarded the Man of the Match award for his figures of 4-2-12-2 as the English side was bowled out for a paltry score of 80, losing the game by 90 runs.

IND vs ENG T20 World Cup - 2009
The Lord’s Cricket Ground produced a sluggish pitch for this virtual knockout game for Team India. England batted first and their batters Ravi Bopara, Dimitri Mascarenhas and Kevin Pietersen stood up. While the first two played run-a-ball knocks of 37 and 25 respectively, Pietersen smashed his way to 46 off 27 deliveries. England finished with a more than decent total of 153/7 in their 20 overs. India lost two early wickets to Ryan Sidebottom and Ravindra Jadeja had to come in to anchor the innings. He did so with the help of opener Gautam Gambhir, but they slowed the innings down too much. Yuvraj Singh (17 off 9), MS Dhoni (30* off 20) and Yusuf Pathan (33* off 17) scored 56 runs in the last 5 overs but still fell short of England’s total by 3 runs. India’s heartbreak was even more hurting as their team had crashed out of the tournament with the loss at the Mecca of cricket.
IND vs ENG T20 World Cup - 2007
Yuvraj Singh vs Stuart Broad - 6 6 6 6 6 6, the event that made this match unforgettable. The eventual Man of the Series award winner made history by becoming the first batter to hit six sixes in an over in T20I cricket. He also scored the fastest T20I half-century (12 balls) and still holds the record. What not many remember about this game is that Gautam Gambhir (58 off 41) and Virender Sehwag (68 off 52) recorded the first-ever hundred-run stand for Team India in T20I cricket. India finished with 218/4 on the board. The other thing from this game that is not much talked about is the fact that England came close to the target with 200. Vikram Solanki (43 off 31) and Kevin Pietersen (39 off 23) led the run-chase but no other batter could get past 30, eventually leading to them falling short of the target.
