India and New Zealand rivalry in the World Cup started from the first Cricket World Cup in 1975, when the two teams came face to face on 14 June, 1975. Playing at Manchester, the Kiwi team gained an easy victory by 4 wickets. Abid Ali scored a half century (70 runs) in that match along with several others who contributed some part. The poor bowling attack owed India’s loss as New Zealand reached the target very easily.

The next India vs New Zealand match took place on 13 June 1979 at Leeds, where New Zealand won the match by 6 wickets. India put a target of only 183 runs for New Zealand which they easily achieved with the innings packed with half centuries by Wright, Tuner and Edgar.

The third encounter against New Zealand was seen on 14 October 1987, at Bengaluru where India won the match by 16 runs. The innings of Sidhu and Kapil Dev helped India put a score of 252 runs which could not be reached by New Zealand, even though they reached close enough. Rutherford was the top scorer for New Zealand with 75 runs off 95 deliveries.

The match on 31 October, 1987, was a breathtaking match between both the cricketing giants. The Kiwi team set 221 runs on the board due to the scores of John Wright and DN Patel. However, India easily managed to get the target score with the loss of a single wicket, resulting in a victory by 9 wickets.

The fifth India vs New Zealand match was played on 12 March, 1992, where New Zealand won the match by 4 wickets. The Indian team could score only 230 runs while New Zealand faced no problem in chasing a target of 231 and emerged victorious.

In the sixth encounter of India vs New Zealand in the World Cups, the Kiwi team put a score of 250 runs with Jadeja taking the lead. However, the Indian bowlers could not stop the Kiwi team from achieving that target and New Zealand won the match by 5 wickets.

The seventh match was the 2003 World Cup match where New Zealand put a score of 146 in less than 50 overs. However, India reached the winning score of 150 by losing 3 wickets.

The eighth match which was bound to take place in World Cup 2019 got abandoned due to rain. Which leaves the India vs New Zealand Head to Head record to 3-4.

The ninth match of India vs New Zealand was in Semi final of World Cup 2019, where India lost to New Zealand by 18 runs and lost their World Cup dreams. Earlier in the match Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor batted well to put up a total of 239 on the board. India while chasing lost early wickets and fell back in the game. Though Jadeja and Dhoni built some great partnership and took close to the finish line, they failed to cross it.

In the tenth match-up, hosts India faced New Zealand at the Dharamsala on October 22, 2023, in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Daryl Mitchell’s fantastic century of 130 runs off 127 deliveries was not enough as India won the game by a margin of 4 wickets, thanks to a five-wicket haul from Mohammed Shami and a half-century from Virat Kohli.

In the last encounter, India locked horns with the Kiwis once again in the same tournament in the first semifinal. India posted a humongous total of 397/4 with centuries from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. Despite a fighting knock from Daryl Mitchell, New Zealand fell short by 70 runs. New Zealand has entered the semis of the World Cup three times in a row.
