Sri Lanka
Danushka Gunathilaka - 4.5/10
The Sri Lankan opener had an average start and failed to convert it to a decent score. He seemed to be in good touch early on, but tossed his wicket to a ball bowled outside the leg stump. He should have capitalized on the bad ball but instead, he ended up giving his wicket away.
Upul Tharanga - 3.5/10
Tharanga couldn’t continue his form from the last match as he seemed restless and was beaten on a couple of occasions. He lost his wicket to an average ball outside the off stump because of the lack of patience on the part of the opener.
Lahiru Thirimanne – 6/10
Thirimanne seemed to be in control of his innings and was slowly building a partnership with Mathews. However, he attempted to play reverse sweep against Sundar and completely missed the ball that went on to hit the stumps.
On the field, he took two catches, which includes a low, good catch at midwicket to dismiss Dhawan.
Angelo Mathews - 8.5/10
Undoubtedly, Mathews was the best player and the only positive for the Sri Lankan side in this match. He bowled accurately and only conceded 9 runs in his 4 overs including a maiden. With the bat, he was exceptional as he scored a fighting 111 to get his team to a respectable total. The all-rounder had an amazing game and would have hoped for some support from the other Sri Lankan batsmen.
Niroshan Dickwella - 5/10
The Sri Lankan wicketkeeper had a decent start and looked to be in a good touch. Dickwella was aggressive and tried to build a partnership along with Mathews. However, the attempt to recover failed as he sliced the ball to Sundar at short third man. He had to be aggressive as the team didn’t have a choice because of the increasing run rate.
Asela Gunaratne - 5.5/10
Similar to the rest of the team, Gunaratne had a good start but failed to convert it to a big score. Moreover, he was needed by the team to build a good partnership with Angelo Mathews. Conversely, he should have been patient and showed good temperament to support Mathews in giving his team a fighting chance.
With the ball, Gunaratne gave 10 runs in the one over he bowled.
Thisara Perera – 4.5/10
Perera had one of the most dreadful matches as a captain. His decision to bowl first overturned as the Indian batting lineup completely destroyed the Sri Lankan bowling and none of his judgments were working in his favor.
As a bowler, despite taking 3 wickets towards the end, he conceded 80 runs in the 8 overs he bowled. With the bat, he couldn’t grab his opportunity as Chahal cramped him for room and it caught the edge, allowing Dhoni to take a spectacular catch. It clearly wasn’t the best match for the Sri Lankan skipper and he would like to have a better game in Vishakhapatnam.
Sachith Pathirana – 4.5/10
The left-arm spinner didn’t have the best of games with the ball. He conceded 63 runs in the 9 overs bowled and took the wicket of Dhawan. Pathirana came in to bat in the 31st over and he lost his wicket to Bhuvneshwar Kumar for only two runs.
Akila Dananjaya – 5/10
In a high scoring game that was a nightmare for the bowlers, Dananjaya along with Mathews was reasonably economical. He gave away 51 runs in 10 overs which is a decent economy for a high score of 392.
Suranga Lakmal - 3/10
The man of the match from the previous game was one of the poorest performers in Chandigarh. He conceded 71 runs in 8 overs and was also hit for 4 sixes in a single over. He had a horrific match as he didn’t get the line and length accurately and was punished for all the bad deliveries bowled. He would prefer replicating his performances from the first match to help Sri Lanka win the series.
Nuwan Pradeep Fernando - 2/10
Fernando was destroyed by all the batsmen of the Indian team and hit around the park. He conceded 106 runs in 10 overs at an economy of 10.6. He wasn’t able to get the rhythm and accuracy that he bowled in the first ODI. Thereby, he was the most expensive bowler of the match and would like to resolve his issues with line and length.
