India extended their advantage in the second Test of the four-match series against West Indies thanks to KL Rahul’s career-best Test score and useful contributions from Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara on day two of the Test in Jamaica.
Having begun the day on 126/1, Rahul got to his century quickly before Pujara was unfortunate to be run out just a few runs shy of a fifty. Kohli, who was coming on the back of his career-best first-class score, fell short of his fifty as well.
At the end of the day, India lead by 162 runs and go into the third day with Ajinkya Rahane and Wriddhiman Saha at the crease and five wickets still in hand.
Here are some interesting stats from the day:
1 – KL Rahul became the first Indian opener to score a century in his first Test innings in West Indies. The previous-best was Ajay Jadeja’s 96 he scored in 1997.
2 – KL Rahul becomes the second Indian batsman after Azharuddin to convert all his first three Test fifties to hundreds.
3 – Rahul’s first three Test centuries have all come away from home. It was the same case for Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. Will he follow in those footsteps?
5 – Indian cricket team opener became the fifth batsman to score a 150 on the first innings in WI. Only Glenn Turner and Andrew Hudson with 223* and 163 have scored more runs in their first innings in WI than KL Rahul’s 158.
8 – Sunil Gavaskar holds the record for most hundreds as Indian opener away from India as he scored a hundred in his first eight Tests. Rahul Dravid is second with four and Rahul joined Vinoo Mankad with three.
9 – India have had nine 50+plus partnerships in 11 partnerships in the series so far.
11 – Rahul is the fourth-fastest Indian to three Test tons. Mohammad Azharuddin got there in just 4 innings and holds the all-time record for India, while Vinod Kambli (6) and Sunil Gavaskar (7) reached it quicker than KL Rahul, who reached it in 11 innings, which is the same as Cheteshwar Pujara.
158 – KL Rahul’s 158 wasn’t just his career-best Test score for India but it was also the highest score by an Indian on his debut innings in West Indies. The previous-record was held by Polly Umrigar who scored 130.
2013 – Before KL Rahul achieved his century with a six, the last Indian batsman to do so was Rohit Sharma, who got there with a six, also against West Indies at Mumbai in November 2013.
