We, Indian cricket team fans certainly are the best. We venture out for matches that are dead rubbers. We venture out for Test matches. We venture out for matches in extreme heat, and extreme cold for that matter. We venture out on all days of the week, all months of the year. If an Indian cricket fan gives his/her support for something, it is total support. The bond formed between an Indian cricket fan and the team is unbreakable. It is a sort of ’till death do us apart’ situation. Even the worst of the worst teams are supported whole heartedly. That is, perhaps, the very best quality of these fans.
You don’t believe me? Look at the facts then – Only in India, there’s a full stadium for a dead rubber between India and its arch enemy/nemesis Pakistan. Only in India, will you see people thronging to the stadium for a Test match. Only an Indian cricket fan would bother to go to the stadium, to watch a match in extreme weather conditions. Whether it be 4 degree Celsius or 40 degree Celsius, only an Indian cricket fan will think of attending a cricket match irrespective of it being a Tuesday or a Sunday, in April or in December.
We cheer ecstatically when someone from our team scores a boundary, clap smugly at every cheeky single, sit heartbroken when our team’s wicket falls and we also plot revenge against the bowler. When the opposing team drops a catch or mis-fields, the cheers can be heard for miles. Our hopes drop along with the catch if it’s us fielding. We’re furious at an opposition boundary. Even opposition singles are very menacing sometimes. We jump on our feet when our team takes a wicket. Also, we boo the next few balls if no more wickets are taken. If we see one of our batsmen getting comfortable on the pitch, we start chanting his name. We clap emphatically at records being broken and tons being scored. We do the Mexican wave all the time. We dance and sing when our team wins. Basically, whatever the team does on the field, we do in our respective locations. We’re not crazy- we’re Indian cricket fans.
We never, ever give up. We give utmost support and trust our favourite teams no matter what. So at the very least, the team should be willing to give their best on the field, because for us, cricket is a religion and cricketers, our Gods.
What is the best way to judge an Indian team? Ask yourself this question – Is this team worthy of the support from an Indian cricket fan?
