Although he did not play any matches in the Champions Trophy 2017, he was part of the Champions Trophy squad. The wicketkeeper-batsman made a comeback to the national ODI team after a long time following his impressive domestic performances and his heroics in the Nidahas Trophy final 2018. He was also called back to the national Test side in the recently concluded series against England in the absence of the regular test wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha.

However, he was replaced by debutant Rishabh Pant after a string of poor performances.

He is currently playing the Asia Cup 2018.

With Dhoni playing his last World Cup in all possibilities, it is less likely that Dhoni will be replaced by Karthik.

With young Rishabh Pant's rapid rise in limited overs cricket, he may nudge ahead in the race of the backup wicketkeeper.

However he may be the answer to India's no. 4 wobbles but with Rahane, KL Rahul and Manish Pandey already in contention for that spot, Karthik needs superb performances and needs to shine in whatever chances he gets in order to make it to the Indian World Cup team.
