After winning the toss, Sachin Tendulkar decided to bat. India batted poorly in their first essay and could only manage 223. Tendulkar was the top scorer with 42. The bowlers responded for India and restricted South Africa for 244 in their 1st innings. Sunil Joshi was the wrecker in chief with 4 wickets in the first innings.

Even in the second innings, the Indian batsmen faltered as they were bundled out for 190. Chasing 170 to win in the fourth innings, the Proteas were shot out for 105. It was the pace and swing of Javagal Srinath that undid the South African batsmen as he finished with 6/21. He was ably supported by Anil Kumble who chipped in with 3 wickets.
