The BCCI pushed back an ODI between India and New Zealand at the Feroze Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi from 19 October by one day, giving the unusual explanation of the Hindu festival of ‘Karva Chauth’.
Karva Chauth involves women fasting from sunrise to moonrise as a ritual. The fast is broken only after their husbands offer them their first bite of food for the day. Due to this, not many people would turn up for the match and the ticket sales would have taken a hit, felt the DDCA.
However, not everybody saw eye to eye with the BCCI decision on this, owing to the fact that Karva Chauth has rarely crossed paths with the sport before.
One explanation, however, that has been offered for what seems like an extraordinary move is that Karva Chauth depends on the lunar calendar, and it has only recently been decided that the concerned date would be October 19. Assuming that more fans would indeed be able to come to the match on a non-festival day, the lateness of the change of date can be explained.
However, it is unfortunate that the controversy is surrounding a match scheduled to be at the Kotla, a stadium that has been at the centre of too many storms in recent times.
