IPL 2017: MI vs RPS, Washington Sundar's exceptional spell is SK Turning Point of the match

The under-19 off-spin et was the surprise package in the qualifier with his superb spell

17-year-old Washington Sundar changed the qualifier at the Wankhede on its head with a two-over spell that went for just four runs and accounted for three crucial Mumbai wickets. Sundar accounted for Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard in his two overs that came on either side of the powerplays.

Mumbai Indians were cruising in their chase of 163 with Parthiv Patel taking the hosts to a flier. Simmons had just gone after Parthiv's shot had deflected off Thakur's hands onto the non-strikers' stumps catching the Windies opener short.

Sundar, who had bowled his first over for 8, came back into the attack in the last over of powerplay with Mumbai at 41/1 and trapped Rohit Sharma in front off the very first delivery. The Mumbai captain was understandably miffed at the decision as he had an inside edge which the on-field umpire failed to spot.

Ambati Rayudu, who had replaced Nitish Rana in the previous game and played a gem of an innings against Kolkata, walked in at 4 but lasted just two balls after which he tried to pull a long hop from Sundar to the mid-wicket fence.

Steven Smith pulled off a stunning catch at short mid-wicket to send back Rayudu. Sundar had turned the match on its head with two wickets in an over conceding just a single run.

The 17-year-old wasn't done though and had Kieron Pollard back in the hut in a dismissal that seemed like a replay of the Rayudu wicket. Once again Steven Smith completed a superb take at short mid-wicket to reduce Mumbai to 51/4.

Mumbai had lost 3 wickets in the space of 2 overs and 10 runs and all three of them went to Washington Sundar. Sundar's eye-catching two over spell is the SK Turning Point of the Match. Sundar completed his quota of overs conceding just 16 runs.

How the match progressed

Parthiv Patel continued to play the anchor role even as Hardik Pandya fell to Lockie Ferguson for 14. The wicket-keeper batsman stroked a half-century off 37 balls but Mumbai were well behind by now with Christian and Ferguson also applying the choke.

Shardul Thakur then landed the decisive blow by dismissing Krunal Pandya and Parthiv Patel in the same over, both of whom holed out to Dan Christian at long off. Pune wasted little time in finishing the game off and strolled to the finals of IPL 2017.
