It was one of the two new franchises included for the 2011 IPL ,along with the Kochi franchise. The Sahara Adventure Sports Limited owned this team. In the first season, they played their home games at the DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai.

Yuvraj Singh captained the side during the 2011 season, where they finished 9th among the ten teams. Sourav Ganguly took over the reigns in the next IPL, as Yuvraj Singh was recovering from cancer at the time.

They finished at the bottom of the table after winning just four out of their 16 league games. For the 2013 season, the Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews was made their Captain. It was their last season in the IPL, and they finished 8th in the table. In May, 2013 they withdrew from the IPL due to the financial disputes with the BCCI.
