After the two-year suspension of the CSK and RR in 2015, the BCCI added two new teams to replace them for the next two seasons. One of those were the Gujarat Lions, owned by Keshav Bansal of Intex Technologies.
They played two seasons in the IPL-2016 and 2017. Suresh Raina was their skipper, and Brad Hodge was their head coach. The franchise comprised several big players like Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch.
In their inaugural season in 2016, they finished on top of the league standings, winning nine out of the 14 matches. Eventually, they lost in the playoffs to the RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
In the 2017 season, they finished seventh in the league table, winning just four out of their 14 games and failing to replicate their previous season form.
Seasons: 2016, 2017
Best finish: Playoffs - 2016
