This was one of the two franchises formed to replace the suspended CSK and RR for 2016 and 2017 IPL. MS Dhoni captained the side in the 2016 season. The RP-Sanjiv Goenka group owned the franchise from Pune.

The former New Zealand skipper, Stephen Fleming was their coach. In the 2016 season, the RPS finished at seventh position in the league table after winning just five out of their 14 matches.

In the 2017 season, they made a remarkable comeback, finishing as the runners-up to the Mumbai Indians. Pune eventually lost to MI by a margin of one run. Australian skipper Steven Smith captained them in the 2017 season.

Seasons: 2016 and 2017

Best finish: Runners-up - 2017
