The IPL is entering its second decade and, the most exciting news so far has been the return of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals after a suspension of two years. IPL 11 promises to be another action-packed, star-studded league, like the past ten editions.
The 11th season of IPL is slated to kick off from April 7th with arch-rivals Mumbai Indians(MI) taking on Chennai Super Kings(CSK) at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Before the start of the season itself, many issues are surrounding IPL 11 which have put question marks over the availability of the players.
Here goes a list of 5 players whose participation in IPL 11 is doubt due to several issues:
#5 Jofra Archer
Rajasthan Royals bought Jofra Archer for a whopping sum of ₹7.2 crores in the auction held at Bengaluru.
Jofra Archer attracted the headlines with his stint for Hobart Hurricanes in the recently concluded Big-Bash League. Even in Pakistan Super League(PSL), he played two matches for Quetta Gladiators and was quite impressive in both outings for them. Now, the concern is he is ruled out for the rest of PSL due to a side strain. Gladiators have called Ben Laughlin as a replacement for him.
The matter of tension and, a concern is now for Rajasthan Royals. Rajasthan based franchise turned every stone to build the strong squad. However, Archer's fitness is a severe problem for them, who have highly relied on Archer and Unadkat for their bowling attack. It is not clear if he will be available for the IPL or not.
#4 Ravindra Jadeja
Before the auction, every team was allowed to retain a maximum of 3 players. CSK decided to retain MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, and Ravindra Jadeja.
Ravindra Jadeja was the third choice player and retained for ₹7 crores. Ravindra Jadeja has been instrumental in CSK's performance in the IPL ever since his debut in 2012. Playing in 70 matches for CSK, he has picked 55 wickets with an average of 30.56 and an economy 7.81. Proving his mettle with the bat, he has scored 670runs with an astonishing strike rate of 130+.
In recent times, Ravindra Jadeja suffered a side strain and, is advised to rest from BCCI. It is yet to be confirmed if Jadeja’s injury could play a factor in his ability to play in the tournament. Regarded as a vital cog in CSK's line-up and, if he misses the initial stages of the competition, it could hamper CSK's performances.
#3 Mohammed Shami
Delhi Daredevils retained the services of the Indian pacer- Mohammed Shami for ₹3 crores using Right to Match (RTM) card in the IPL auction held in January. He performed well in the series against the Proteas in South Africa.
At present, Mohammed Shami finds himself in the news for all the wrong reasons.Shami's wife, Hasin Jahan registered an FIR against him and, his family claiming adultery, torture and threatening to kill her and her daughter. He is booked under several sections like 498A, 323 and 307.
Delhi based franchise owner, GMR group have stated that unless Shami comes out clean chit, they are not going to board him in their team. He might be unavailable to go in IPL as the procedure takes a long time and also involves police in it.
#2 Sunil Narine
The prime Windies off-spinner, Sunil Narine was retained by his franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders for this season in January. The mystery spinner has found himself in deep-waters as ICC warns him for illegal bowling action.
Playing for Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League(PSL), he has been reported for a suspected illegal bowling action during the match between Lahore Qalandars & Quetta Gladiators at Sharjah.
In the previous season, he proved that he could be a match-winner with the bat also. He piled up 224 runs in 16 matches with a demolishing strike rate of 172.30. He also boasts the record of scoring the fastest half-century in IPL, which came against RCB in 12 balls.
Although he can play in PSL and IPL, he could face a suspension if he is reported again for illegal bowling action. If Sunil Narine opts to remodel his bowling action, he will be away from the IPL for a long time, which could jeopardize KKR's chances in the league.
#1 Chris Lynn
Kolkata Knight Riders bought dashing opener, Chris Lynn for a lucrative deal in the IPL auction which recently concluded in January. Last season, along with Gautam Gambhir he exploited the opposition and gave a bright start for KKR in the tournament.
However, the dazzling player was sidelined for half of the season as he hurt his shoulder, playing against the Mumbai Indians. Although he did return to the team towards the fag-end of the tournament, he missed quite a few matches for KKR.
In the recent days, Chris Lynn is once again reported to be injured and, has dislocated his right shoulder while playing the T20I decider against New Zealand, and didn't play any further part in the game. He opted out of the PSL due to the injury which looks quite severe.
Kolkata based franchise are finding themselves in deep trouble with less than three weeks remaining for the start of IPL. Many of them have confirmed their unavailability due to various reasons. If Chris Lynn also opts out of the tournament, KKR will be ruing themselves for their fate before the start of the tournament itself.
