Despite being one of India's finest fast bowlers in Test cricket, Ishant Sharma's IPL career has been unfulfilling, to say the least. One of the major reasons for his failures in the IPL has been his inconsistency. In a game against Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2013, Ishant lost the plot completely and CSK smashed 66 runs off his 4 overs, scoring 223 runs in their innings. Sunrisers could only score 146 runs in reply, losing the match by 77 runs.

Basil Thampi was named the Emerging Player of the Season in IPL 2017 and thus expectations were high from the Kerala pacer in IPL 2018.

Sunrisers Hyderabad already had a strong pace attack and thus Thampi got very few opportunities in the tournament. And when he did get a match, Thampi set an unwanted record. RCB clobbered the youngster for 70 runs in a match that was played at Bengaluru. Both the teams scored over 200 runs in the match that RCB eventually won by 14 runs.
