IPL 2019 has arrived and all the teams have started preparing for the upcoming edition. 7 out of the 8 IPL teams are being managed by experienced coaches in IPL, while Punjab has introduced Mike Hesson (former New Zeland Coach) to IPL.

Head coaches of any IPL team play a crucial role in managing the resources and making effective use of the available players. It is for this reason, we consider a few coaches as successful coaches in IPL. Here In this article, let us look at the 8 IPL 2019 coaches and how they have fared in previous editions of IPL based on their win-percentage.

Let us see who the most successful Coaches in IPL 2019 are:

# 8 Mike Hesson - Kings XI Punjab

Win Percentage in IPL - N.A

Mike Hesson is the only debutant coach among the coaches of all the 8 IPL teams. He previously served as the coach of the New Zealand cricket team until 2018. He is widely known for his effective man management skills and his calm outlook.

Having played the last edition of IPL under Brad Hodge, Punjab had everything going well for them in the initial stages. The team faltered in the final laps and failed to qualify. Mike Hesson will be given the responsibility to bring the IPL 2019 trophy to the Punjab dugout for the first time since the inception of the league.

Mike Hesson was a crucial part of the Punjab think-tank in the IPL 2019 auctions and literally handpicked most of the players including Sam Curran, Moises Henriques, Mohammed Shami, Nicholas Pooran, Varun Chakravarthy among the others.

Since he has no previous experience in IPL, his win % has no relevance. But going by his experience as an international team coach, you surely can’t write him off in IPL 2019.

# 7 Gary Kirsten – Royal Challengers Bangalore

Gary Kirsten will be looking to improve his Win percentage in IPL 2019 with RCB.
Gary Kirsten will be looking to improve his Win percentage in IPL 2019 with RCB.
Win Percentage in IPL - 25%

Gary Kirsten is a high-profile coach in the international cricket circuit. Yet, he has not got that kind of success in the IPL. He coached Delhi Daredevils for 2 editions in 2014 and 2015 and garnered only 7 wins from 28 games.

He was part of the RCB coaching staff in IPL 2018 under Daniel Vettori and has now been appointed the head coach of RCB for IPL 2019. Bangalore will be hoping that Kirsten can bring about the required changes to the squad and ensure the much sought after IPL title victory for RCB and Virat Kohli.

Kirsten got a time-frame to understand the RCB culture in the last IPL and will now be better equipped to handle the issues with a rejuvenated RCB squad in IPL 2019.

With a win % of just 25, Gary Kirsten is far below his capabilities in this list as the 7th best coach among all the coaches of IPL 2019 teams.

# 6 Paddy Upton – Rajasthan Royals

Win Percentage in IPL - 50%

Paddy Upton initially forayed into the IPL scene in 2012 as part of the coaching staff of Pune Warriors India squad with Sourav Ganguly at the helm. In 2013, he was appointed as the head coach of Rajasthan Royals and managed the franchise for 3 years before Royals were banned.

In the 2 years of the ban, he coached the Delhi Daredevils squad. He is known to be quite close to Rahul Dravid professionally and works along the same line as the India A team coach.

Rajasthan Royals management has once again entrusted the task of taking Royals to the victory in IPL 2019 to him and he will want to have a trophy on his resume to further his career.

In total, 72 matches were played under him and he has ensured wins in 36 matches taking his win % to 50. He comes into our list as the 6th best coach by win % among all the coaches of IPL 2019 teams.

# 5 Ricky Ponting - Delhi Capitals

Win Percentage in IPL - 50%

Ricky Ponting was appointed as the head coach of Mumbai Indians for the seasons 2015 and 2016. While Mumbai emerged as the champions in the 2015 edition of IPL, Mumbai was knocked out in the league stages of the very next edition. Ponting then took up the coaching job at Delhi Daredevils in the 2018 edition and did not have a successful story to proclaim.

But with the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Colin Ingram and a slew of West Indian allrounders joining the side, Ricky Ponting will be hopeful of bettering the prospects of the Delhi Capitals side in the 2019 edition of the Indian premier league with his experience.

In total, teams have played 44 matches under him and have won 22 times. His win % of 50 sees him making up this list as the 5th best coach by win % among all the coaches of IPL 2019 teams.

# 4 Tom Moody – Sunrisers Hyderabad

Tom Moody has won the IPL trophy for SRH and will now be hopeful of regaining it in 2019.
Tom Moody has won the IPL trophy for SRH and will now be hopeful of regaining it in 2019.
Win Percentage in IPL - 53.28 %

Tom Moody was the head coach of Kings XI Punjab for 3 seasons from 2008-2010. Under him, Punjab reached the playoffs stage in the inaugural edition of IPL. But he could not recreate his success in 2009 and 2010 and parted ways with the club.

When Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise was formed in 2013, Moody was designated to be the head coach and has continued in that profile ever since then. He had led Sunrisers to the champions’ title once in 2016 under David Warner and to the playoffs stage thrice in 2013, 2017 and 2018. SRH was the runners-up in IPL 2018 season under Kane Williamson.

With David Warner expected to return to the IPL, Tom Moody will have a greater role to play in ensuring that SRH has the right balance to regain the trophy in IPL 2019.

2 different franchises have played 137 matches under him and he has ensured wins in 73 of them. His winning percentage of 53.28 sees him coming into our list as the 4th best coach by win % among all the coaches of IPL 2019 teams.

# 3 Jacques Kallis – Kolkata Knight Riders

Win Percentage in IPL - 55.32 %

Jacques Kallis joined as the head coach of the Kolkata Knight riders in 2016 and the Kolkata side has played 3 seasons under him. He had previously played for KKR as an overseas player and was well-versed with the culture of the KKR camp before taking up the coaching role.

He played a pivotal role in ensuring that KKR reached the Playoffs stage in all the 3 seasons in IPL 2016, IPL 2017 and in IPL 2018. In all the 3 seasons under him, KKR could not reach the finals and were eliminated in the playoffs. Kallis will have that in his mind while he prepares for the IPL 2019 edition. With increased firepower having brought in the likes of Carlos Brathwaite and retaining their core group of players, Kallis will want KKR to go that extra mile in IPL 2019.

In total he had ensured 26 wins in 47 matches for the Shahrukh Khan Owned side. His winning percentage of 55.32 sees him coming into our list as the 3rd best coach by win % among all the coaches of IPL 2019 teams.

# 2 Mahela Jayawardene – Mumbai Indians

Jayawardene will know that Mumbai has won the title in odd years and will be hoping that they do the same in IPL 2019
Jayawardene will know that Mumbai has won the title in odd years and will be hoping that they do the same in IPL 2019
Win Percentage in IPL - 58.06 %

Mahela Jayawardene was appointed the Head Coach of the Mumbai Indians squad from IPL 2017. He coached the side for 2 seasons and enjoyed considerable success with the Rohit Sharma Captained side. He took over the coaching baton from Ricky Ponting who was in charge of the side in IPL 2016.

The Srilankan stalwart was able to mentor the team to the champions title in the IPL 2017 edition, but the Mumbai side failed to reach the playoffs in the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League.

Jayawardene will be back once again holding the fort for Mumbai Indians to win the IPL 2019 trophy. With the addition of a few key players like Yuvraj Singh and Lasith Malinga, he will have his plans ready to regain the trophy for Mumbai in 2019.

In total, he had ensured 18 wins in 31matches for Mumbai Indians. His winning percentage of 58.06 sees him coming into our list as the 2nd best coach by win % among all the coaches of IPL 2019 teams.

Win Percentage in IPL - 59.26 %

Stephen Fleming is the most experienced head coach of the Indian Premier League. He has been in charge of 2 different clubs for 10 seasons of IPL so far and has ensured 96 wins in 162 matches. Barring the inaugural edition of IPL in 2008 and the 2 seasons when CSK was banned, Stephen Fleming had been in charge of the club for every other 8 seasons. In the 2 seasons of the ban, Fleming went on as the head coach for Rising Pune Supergiants in partnership with MS Dhoni.

Stephen Fleming literally took the Chennai side to become the most successful and most valued IPL franchise of the Indian premier league. They won the IPL title thrice in 2010, 2011 and in 2018 to celebrate the return from the ban. It is interesting to note that CSK has entered into the playoffs stage in all the seasons of IPL played by them and Stephen Fleming deserves credit for the consistency.

In 2016 and 2017, while being the head coach of Rising Pune Supergiants, Fleming enjoyed mixed success with the team being the runners-up in 2017 while being 7th in the 2016 edition.

His winning percentage of 59.26 sees him coming into our list as the best coach among the coaches of IPL 2019.
