Garg made his first-class debut for his home state Uttar Pradesh in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy and scored his maiden double century within a month of making his debut. His performances with the bat prompted his selection for the Duleep Trophy as well as the Deodhar Trophy.

The youngster impressed in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and was handed the reigns of the Indian U-19 team for the World Cup next year. He will follow the footsteps of Prithvi Shaw who lead India to the win in the last U-19 World Cup.

Sunrisers Hyderabad decided to bid big for the young Garg backing on his ability to score well in the middle order and a chance to develop young talent for their future in the IPL.
