Mumbai Indians (MI) are set to take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the penultimate match of the league phase of IPL 2023 on a doubleheader Sunday, May 21, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
MI defeated Aiden Markram’s SRH by 14 runs when both sides met in the reverse fixture in Hyderabad. The upcoming clash is a must-win fixture for the five-time champions as they hope to seal their place in the final four.
With 14 points and a net run rate of -0.128, MI are placed in the sixth position in the table. A win here would take Rohit Sharma-led side to 16 points but that would also not guarantee them a spot in the Playoffs.
On the other hand, it’s been another poor season for Markram's Orange Army as they have played 13 matches with just four wins and nine losses. With eight points, they are at rock bottom at the tenth position. The Sunrisers will look to avoid finishing last on the table and end the season on a positive note.
Every IPL game offers both teams a chance to reach a certain milestone and some records are on the verge of being shattered during the upcoming game as well. On that note, let's take a look at the top three milestones that could be reached in tonight's MI vs SRH fixture.
#3 Suryakumar Yadav could break Sachin Tendulkar's record for MI
With 486 runs at a phenomenal strike rate of 186.9, Suryakumar Yadav has been fantastic in IPL 2023. He has been the best performer for MI and could break a record in the clash against SRH as well.
Suryakumar, who has played in 82 innings for MI, has mustered 2,569 runs at an average of 34.7 and at a strike rate of 145.3. He is currently the fifth-highest run-getter in the franchise's history and could surpass Sachin Tendulkar on the list.
The 'Master Blaster' amassed 2599 during his career with MI. If SKY goes on to score at least 31 runs against SRH, he would surpass Tendulkar's tally to become MI's fourth-highest run-getter of all-time.
#2 Bhuvneshwar Kumar could become the second-highest wicket-taking pacer in IPL history
Bhuvneshwar Kumar has undoubtedly been one of the most underrated players in the history of the league. It's been over 12 years since he made his debut in the IPL and he continues to be a consistent performer with the ball.
Having played 159 IPL games, he has picked up 169 wickets at an excellent economy rate of 7.40. This is the third-most by any pacer in IPL history behind Dwayne Bravo and Lasith Malinga's 183 and 170 wickets, respectively.
If the 33-year-old picks up two wickets against MI, the SRH pacer will surpass Malinga's tally. By doing so, he will become the second-leading wicket-taking pacer in the history of the marquee tournament.
#1 Rohit Sharma could become only the second Indian to complete 11,000 T20 runs
Although he hasn't been great with the bat so far this season, Rohit Sharma hinted that he is truly back in touch when he scored 29 and 37 in his previous two games.
The 36-year-old will look to go big today and if he manages to score at least 40 runs, he will complete 11,000 runs in his T20 career.
Having scored 10,960 runs at an average of over 30, Rohit is the second-highest run-getter as an Indian in T20 cricket after Virat Kohli (11,864).
Apart from this, if Rohit notches up 44 runs against SRH, he would become the first-ever player to amass 5,000 IPL runs for Mumbai Indians. Rohit has scored 4,966 IPL runs for the five-time champions.
