In a nail-biting finish to what was perhaps the best match of IPL 2024 so far, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) secured a dramatic 27-run victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK), sealing their playoff berth at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The match was a tense affair throughout. CSK opted to bowl first, and despite a strong start from RCB with good scores from their openers, the middle order faltered. After a short break due to rain, the pitch offered a lot of turn to the spinners.
However, crucial knocks lower down the order propelled RCB to a strong total of 218. The highlight for RCB's batting was how every batter put their hand up and sparked useful contributions.
CSK's chase started well, with Rachin Ravindra scoring a half-century. However, they too lost wickets at regular intervals. The match went down to the wire, with CSK needing 17 runs off the last over qualify for the playoffs.
However, Yash Dayal held his nerve, restricting CSK and clinching a thrilling victory. The win not only secured RCB's place in the playoffs but also shattered CSK's hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
As the exciting match is now in the history books, here are three records that were broken during the RCB vs. CSK game.
#3 Dinesh Karthik joins Rohit Sharma on elite list
The victory was even sweeter for RCB veteran, Dinesh Karthik. This high-pressure encounter could've been his final IPL game, as he had earlier declared this to be his final season.
But amidst the chaos, Karthik achieved a remarkable feat. Playing against CSK, this match marked his 400th T20 appearance, making him only the second Indian cricketer after Rohit Sharma (with 440 T20s) to reach this milestone in the shortest format of the game.
This record-breaking 400th match, coupled with RCB's crucial win and playoff qualification, made it a truly memorable night for Karthik.
#2 RCB - First team to record streaks of 6 consecutive losses & 6 wins in a single IPL season
RCB's win over CSK wasn't just about securing a playoff spot; it marked a historic comeback in the IPL. They became the first team ever to record streaks of six losses and six wins in a single season.
RCB's campaign began abysmally, with seven losses in their first eight games, including a soul-crushing run of six consecutive defeats. But they displayed incredible resilience, pulling off a remarkable turnaround.
They won a record-breaking six consecutive matches in the latter half of the tournament, propelling them from the bottom of the table to a magical playoff berth. This feat surpasses the previous best of five losses and five wins achieved by Deccan Chargers (2010), Punjab Kings (2020) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (2022).
#1 Virat Kohli broke several records vs CSK
Another game, another instance of Virat Kohli breaking not one but a host of records! The modern-day master looked in supreme touch once again as he made 47 off 29 balls.
With this, Kohli forged his IPL 2024 runs tally to over 700. In his 14 outings, the former RCB skipper has mustered 708 runs at an incredible average and strike rate of 64.36 and 155.6, respectively. Kohli has now become the first ever Indian player to record two seasons of IPL with more than 700 runs.
The previous time he smashed 700 runs was during the famous 2016 season. Chris Gayle remains the only other player to smash 700 runs in a season more than two times.
Apart from this, Kohli also became the first ever player to score more than 9,000 T20 runs in a country. He completed 9,000 T20 runs in India. The second on the list is Rohit Sharma, with 8,008 runs in India in T20s.
Kohli also took one catch in the second innings, which made him the outfielder with the most catches in a single venue in IPL history. It was his 41st catch in IPL at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, surpassing Kieron Pollard's record of 40 catches which the Caribbean great took at the Wankhede Stadium.
