The Punjab Kings (PBKS) etched their name in the IPL history books with a record-breaking chase against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). This epic IPL 2024 encounter took place at the Eden Gardens on Friday, April 26.
This match, where as many as 523 runs were scored, will be remembered for a long time for the sheer brilliance displayed by the batters.
KKR got off to a flying start, thanks to a strong opening partnership of 138 runs between Phil Salt and Sunil Narine. The Punjab bowlers struggled early on, dropping crucial catches that allowed the KKR batters to capitalize. KKR ended their innings with a mountainous 261 on the board.
Despite the daunting target, the Punjab openers came out with aggressive intent. Prabhsimran Singh began the chase with a breathtaking 20-ball 54, while Jonny Bairstow kept his wicket intact. He not only anchored the chase but kept hitting boundaries (eight fours and nine maximums) to score a match-winning 108*.
Meanwhile, Shashank Singh continued his red-hot form and hit a delightful cameo of 68* off just 28 deliveries. This incredible win sent shockwaves through the cricketing world and will be remembered as one of the greatest IPL matches.
On that note, here are five significant records that were broken during the enthralling KKR vs PBKS fixture.
#5 PBKS have now conceded the most 200+ scores in IPL history
There's another side to the story of PBKS' historic chase. While they secured a record-breaking win, their bowling performance left a mark for a different reason.
This match marked the 28th time in IPL history that PBKS have conceded over 200 runs. This unwanted record puts them at the top of the list, surpassing Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who have conceded 200+ runs 27 times.
Despite their impressive batting display, PBKS' bowling continues to be a cause for concern. Their inability to restrict opponents' batting lineups could leave them vulnerable in future matches.
#4 Most sixes in an IPL innings by a team
The match was a six-hitting extravaganza, where PBKS' batters truly stole the show. They hit a six every 4.6 balls, which is truly unheard of.
The visitors hammered 24 sixes in total, setting a new record for the most sixes hit by a team in a single IPL innings. It surpassed the previous record of 22 sixes held by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), achieved earlier this IPL season against RCB.
Jonny Bairstow led the charge with a 108* off 48 balls, peppered with nine sixes of his own. He found able support in the form of Shashank Singh (68* off 28 balls), who himself smashed eight sixes.
#3 First IPL match where all 4 openers scored 50+ runs
This IPL encounter between PBKS and KKR wasn't just about a record-breaking chase. It also witnessed a unique feat in the tournament's history. For the first time ever in an IPL match, the four openers from both teams managed to score over 50 runs.
The superb stand between Sunil Narine and Phil Salt kicked off the exciting match. While Narine made 71, Salt top-scored for KKR with a 37-ball 75. For PBKS, it was Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow. Prabhsimran gave the Kings a dream start by smashing a 20-ball 54. And Bairstow, of course, hit a century (108*) of his own.
#2 Most sixes in a men's T20 match
Hitting sixes seemed like a menial task at the Eden Gardens on Friday. It was a dream for boundary lovers, with as many as 42 maximums launched in the KKR vs PBKS clash, the most any men’s T20 match has ever witnessed.
KKR contributed a respectable 18 sixes. But PBKS set the night ablaze with a staggering 24 sixes. Previous to this encounter, two other IPL 2024 matches held the record. The RCB vs SRH (Match 30) and SRH vs MI (Match 8) games saw a total of 38 sixes.
#1 Highest successful run-chase in T20 history
Chasing a monumental target of 262, PBKS produced a masterful batting display to rewrite the record books in T20 cricket.
Their incredible chase not only secured victory but also etched their names in history by surpassing the highest successful run chase in both IPL and T20 cricket.
The Punjab-based franchise broke South Africa's record of chasing down 259 in a T20I match against the West Indies in 2023. Interestingly, the previous best run-chase in IPL history belonged to the Rajasthan Royals (RR), who hunted down 224 twice (2020 and 2024).
