The Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi is gearing up for a crucial encounter as the home team, Delhi Capitals (DC), take on the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 43rd match of IPL 2024. The highly anticipated match will be played in the afternoon on Saturday, April 27.
The Capitals are currently placed sixth on the points table, having won four of nine matches. After a shaky start to the season, they've shown signs of improvement. Opener Jake Fraser-McGurk and middle-order batters Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubbs have been key contributors.
MI, on the other hand, find themselves in a precarious position, languishing at number nine on the table with just three wins from eight matches.
Their batting has been inconsistent, with Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav yet to find their peak form. Jasprit Bumrah remains their bowling mainstay, but the team will need significant contributions from the rest of the attack, particularly their spinners.
The pitch in Delhi has traditionally been known for its slow and low bounce, favoring spinners. However, in recent times, the surface seems to have undergone a change, offering more assistance to batters. We could be in for a high-scoring encounter today, especially considering the in-form batting lineups of both teams.
On that note, here's a look at three players who could score the most runs in today's DC vs MI match.
#3 Suryakumar Yadav (MI)
Suryakumar Yadav, the world's No. 1-ranked T20I batter, has had a mixed bag in IPL 2024. While his unorthodox strokeplay and ability to score all around the wicket are undeniable, he has fallen cheaply on a few occasions.
He failed in the last match, and thus will be eager to be MI's talisman against DC. Against DC's potent spin duo of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, SKY would look to counter with his skilful sweeps and slog sweeps.
The short square boundaries at the venue could help Suryakumar unleash his incredible strokeplay against the Delhi bowlers.
#2 Rishabh Pant (DC)
As the captain and heart of the Delhi Capitals' batting line-up, Rishabh Pant is a constant threat. Fresh from his recent exploits, where he clubbed 88* off 43 balls against Gujarat Titans (GT), Pant will be brimming with confidence.
The 26-year-old boasts an incredible record at Arun Jaitley Stadium. In the 33 matches he has played at the venue, Pant has mustered 1,235 runs at an average above 40 and a strike rate of 169.
Pant is known for his aggressive approach to spin and seam. He could unsettle the stuttering Mumbai attack by taking calculated risks early on, forcing them to bowl to his strengths. Once the southpaw gets his eye in, he'll be able to unleash his full repertoire of shots and dictate the tempo of the innings.
#1 Rohit Sharma (MI)
Rohit Sharma, one of the highest run-getters in IPL history, has been uncharacteristically inconsistent this season. While he has shown glimpses of his brilliance with a century against CSK, consistency has been a concern.
The high-scoring Arun Jaitley Stadium could be the perfect platform for the 36-year-old to find his form. He will look to target the powerplay overs with his elegant strokeplay and capitalize on anything loose from the DC bowlers.
The former MI skipper enjoys a decent record against DC, having mustered 1,026 runs at a strike rate of 132.90 and an average of 33.10. Scoring at a phenomenal strike rate of over 162 so far in IPL 2024, Rohit would aim for another of his vintage knocks to propel MI to a much-needed win on Saturday.
