IPL 6 spot-fixing: Can CSK be banned over owner arrest?

Mumbai Indians v Chennai Super Kings - IPL Final

Mr. Gurunath Meiyappan has brought the IPL to disrepute by breaking all the rules regarding team confidentiality and being allegedly involved with Vindoo Dara Singh in betting. Mr.Meiyappa held an honoured position as the Team Principal of CSK. Mr.Meiyappan was interrogated for three hours and was asked if he had passed on information about the IPL matches.

Joint Commissioner of Mumbai Crime Branch, Himanshu Roy said,

“We interrogated Mr.Meiyappan and based on the information we have find his involvement in the offence. He will now be placed under arrest and will be produced before a court within 24 hours.”

Investigations reveal that Meiyappan had placed bets on CSK matches also. In an intercepted call, Mr.Meiyappan has been recorded saying that he lost Rs.10 lakhs in a match.

Technically, CSK qualifies for being disenfranchised from the IPL and also get their contract terminated under Clause(c), Rule 11.3.

The clause states that, “the Franchisee, any Franchisee group company and/or any Owner acts in any way which has a material adverse effect upon the reputation or standing of the league, BCCI-IPL, BCCI, the Franchisee, the Team(or any other team in the league) and/or the game of cricket”, will lead to the disqualification of the particular team.

BCCI earlier has acted promptly in various cases of termination, for example in case of Deccan Chargers, where they were disbanded due to payment issues. CSK currently has reached the Finals of IPL-2013 and is the most followed team of IPL.

Considering the situation, will Srinivasan take the decision of terminating the agreement of his own team?
