The Vivo IPL Auction never fails to surprise anyone. Despite being top stars in other T20 leagues around the world, these players shouldn't expect themselves to be picked every year due to the level of this tournament. Also, some of these players are in the twilight of their career, having retired from international cricket recently and haven't been playing as they use to in their prime.
There are also some players in this slideshow whose form in domestic circuit has been poor and hence rightfully have not been picked by a franchise. This slideshow also consists of players mainly international who despite being in top form have been unfortunately ignored.
Let us have a look at the four players who were surprisingly left unsold.
#4 Manoj Tiwary
Manoj Tiwary was the first Indian international player who was left unsold at the auction today He is an aggressive middle-order batsman who can play as per the situation but in the recent past hasn’t shown an impressive display while chasing targets for his team.
Despite having played the tournament since 2008 and for four different franchises, Manoj Tiwary was unlucky to remain unsold despite having a decent base price of 50 lakhs.
#3 Dale Steyn
Dale Steyn was one of the most experienced and ferocious pacers available at the auction. Due to his age, a high base price of 2 crores and injury concerns, he was surprisingly left unsold at the auction despite a few teams such as the Royal Challengers Banglore, the Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab needing a foreign pacer at the auction.
This will prove to be a blessing in disguise for the South Africans who will need their speedster to remain fit for the 2019 World Cup. Personally, Steyn will have to ponder about why he will not feature in two successive IPL seasons in a row now.
#2 Chris Woakes
Chris Woakes, despite being one of the best bowling all-rounders in the world at the moment was left unsold at the auction today. It was quite an astonishing decision of all the franchises to not pursue him due to his, experience, ability to both bowl with the new ball and deliver accurate yorkers in the death overs.
This decision might be because English players may not play the whole tournament due to Pakistan touring them at the end of May to play ODIs before the World Cup.
#1 Brendon McCullum
Brendon McCullum was the first biggest foreign star to remain unsold at the auction. Despite having tons of experience and played in this tournament from 2008, it was quite surprising to see that no team attempted to bid for him despite being available at a reasonable base price of 2 crores
Being an extremely aggressive player, the mere presence of McCullum creates fear in the minds of the opposition bowling attack. Also, he is a superb fielder and a great leader for any side to have. Hence, it was unbelievable that no franchise made an effort to bid for player of such quality.
