IPL Captains 2025

Since the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, several legendary cricketers, such as Sachin Tendulkar, Shane Warne, MS Dhoni, Adam Gilchrist, etc, have captained successful teams in the IPL. Among these players, some have led their respective teams to glory, such as Shane Warne in the inaugural edition of the IPL and his compatriot, Adam Gilchrist, in 2009, with the now-defunct Deccan Chargers.

With five IPL trophies each, both Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni are the most successful IPL captains as of March 2025. MS Dhoni also holds the record for playing most matches as captain (226) while leading the Chennai Super Kings (2008-2021 & 2023). With the 2025 season beginning on March 22, every IPL franchise has revealed its captain.

How many captains are there in IPL 2025?

The 2025 edition of IPL will have 10 captains leading their respective franchises across 74 matches. The list below shows the captains with their respective teams.

MI IPL 2025 captain - Hardik Pandya

After leading the Gujarat Titans to a title win in their inaugural season, all-rounder Hardik Pandya returned to the Mumbai Indians last season. As per the official website of the IPL, the Baroda all-rounder was snapped up by MI via an all-cash deal (INR 15 Crores) with the Adani-led Titans in 2023. Following the deal, MI announced that Hardik would replace Rohit Sharma as captain of the franchise from IPL 2024.

CSK IPL 2025 captain - Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj Gaikwad was appointed as the captain of CSK after their long-time skipper MS Dhoni stepped down from the position in 2024. The 2025 season will be Gaikwad's second term as captain of CSK in the IPL. He is the 4th captain for the franchise as of March 2025.

SRH IPL 2025 captain - Pat Cummins

The 2016 IPL champions named Australian National Team's Test and ODI skipper Pat Cummins as their captain for IPL 2024. Like Gaikwad, this is the second time Cummins will lead SRH in the tournament. The ICC Cricket World Cup winning captain was bought by the franchise at the 2024 auction for INR 20.5 Crores.

LSG IPL 2025 captain - Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant will lead the Lucknow SuperGiants in IPL 2025. The former Delhi Capitals skipper was picked by LSG in the 2025 mega auction, becoming the most valuable player in IPL history with a valuation of INR 27 Crores. The Delhi Capitals secured the 6th spot in the 2024 IPL under Pant's captaincy.

GT IPL 2025 captain - Shubman Gill

Following Hardik Pandya’s departure ahead of the 2024 season, the 2022 IPL Champions roped in star opener Shubman Gill for the captaincy role. He will continue to lead the Titans in IPL 2025. Gill had his best IPL season as a batsman in 2023. The right-hander won the coveted Orange Cap after smashing 890 runs in 17 innings at an average of 59.33, scoring four 50s and three 100s.

KKR IPL 2025 captain - Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane was named the captain of the Knight Riders after their title-winning skipper, Shreyas Iyer, left for Punjab Kings for the 2025 season. Rahane, the former captain of the Indian National Team, started his IPL journey with the Rajasthan Royals and previously played for KKR in 2022. He lifted the IPL trophy as a player with CSK in 2023.

RCB IPL 2025 captain - Rajat Patidar

Rajat Patidar will be the captain of RCB in IPL 2025. He started his IPL career in 2021 with the Bengaluru-based franchise. As of March 2025, he has scored 799 runs in 27 matches, with an average of 34.74 and a strike rate of 158.85.

DC IPL 2025 captain - Axar Patel

The Indian National Team all-rounder Axar Patel was named captain of the Delhi Capitals for the 2025 season after Rishabh Pant was picked by LSG in the mega auction. The 2024 T20 World Cup winner made his IPL debut in 2014. As of March 2025, Patel has scored 1653 runs while picking 123 wickets in 150 matches.

PBKS IPL 2025 captain - Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer was named the captain of the Punjab Kings in the 2025 IPL. He lifted the IPL trophy with the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, the franchise's third IPL trophy. The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy winner started his IPL career in 2015 and has scored 3127 runs as of March 2025.

RR IPL 2025 captain - Sanju Samson

Hailing from Kerala, the wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson will continue to lead the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 2025 edition of the IPL. Samson, despite enduring an inconsistent season with the bat (531 runs in 16 matches), helped the team to third place finish in 2024.
