The Australian captain too, like his teammate Finch, has had a taste of playing for various IPL franchises. Starting his career with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2010, he made a move to the Kochi Tuskers Kerala the very next year.

After Kochi's exit from the IPL after just one season, he found himself with the Pune Warriors India in 2012. The Pune franchise too, did not last long and departed from the league in 2013, following which Smith was picked up by the Rajasthan Royals in 2014. After the Royals were banned for 2016 and 2017 season, he was snapped up by the Rising Pune Supergiant, another Pune-based franchise.

In 2018, he finds himself back with the Rajasthan Royals again.
