Initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2008, the IPL features top cricketers from across the globe, representing various franchises. With its blend of sports and entertainment, the league has revolutionized the game with its high-intensity matches, star-studded lineups, and massive fan base. Over the years, the IPL has grown into a billion-dollar tournament, attracting millions of viewers worldwide and becoming a key event in the global cricketing calendar.
IPL's full form
IPL stands for the Indian Premier League. The tournament was introduced by the BCCI as a domestic T20 tournament following India’s victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup. A grand opening was held for the league in Delhi, and its operations were overseen by a governing council, prize money, and structured rules. To differentiate the IPL from similar leagues worldwide, Lalit Modi introduced the auction system, allowing franchises to bid for top players. Initially, eight teams competed in a group-based format but later on, the playoff system was introduced in 2011. That provided the top four teams with an additional opportunity to advance to the final. Matches are mostly scheduled in the evening to maximize viewership in India.
IPL's format
The IPL format is divided into two parts: League stage and Playoffs. Among this, the Playoffs are divided into four parts: Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final.
The IPL follows a format where 10 teams face off against each other, each playing 14 matches—seven at home and seven away. Teams earn two points for a win, one point each if a match has no result, and none for a loss. The top four teams in the standings advance to the playoffs. The top two teams battle in Qualifier 1, with the winner securing a direct spot in the final, while the loser gets another chance in Qualifier 2. The third and fourth-placed teams clash in the Eliminator, with the winner facing the loser of Qualifier 1 for a place in the final. The tournament concludes with the final match, where the last two standing teams compete for the prestigious IPL trophy.
