The Indian Premier League (IPL), organized by the BCCI, begins on March 22, 2025, with a match against the defending champions KKR and three-time finalists RCB. Over the past 17 seasons, the IPL has witnessed players breaking numerous records, such as the highest partnership, the highest score set by an individual player in T20s, and much more.
As of March 2025, RCB's former captain Virat Kohli and retired South African middle-order batter AB de Villiers have the highest and the second-highest batting partnerships. Shaun Marsh and Adam Gilchrist were the first duo to score a 200+ partnership in the league (May 2011). Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul have also marked their name on the list with the highest-opening partnership (210 runs).
Highest partnership in the IPL
Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers hold the record for the highest partnership in Indian Premier League history, as of March 2025. Their 229-run partnership against the Gujarat Lions came during the 2016 season. Kohli scored 109 off 55 while ABD remained unbeaten on 129 off 52, guiding RCB to a winning first-innings score of 248/3. Kohli and ABD also hold the record for the 2nd highest partnership in IPL history. The duo scored an unbeaten 215 runs between them during an encounter against the Mumbai Indians in 2015. De Villiers was the standout performer in this inning as he smashed 133 off 59 balls while Kohli played the supporting act with 82 runs off 50 balls.
The third-highest partnership stand in IPL history belongs to LSG's former opening duo of Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul. They added a record-breaking 210 for the first wicket partnership against KKR in IPL 2022. This also remains the highest opening partnership in the league's history, as of March 22, 2025. Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan matched this record (210 runs) while playing for the Gujarat Titans in 2024 against CSK.
Former Kings XI Punjab duo Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh were the first pair to rack up a 200+ (206) stand in IPL history. The Australian duo achieved the feat during the 2011 season after they scored 206 runs against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Gilchrist scored 106 runs off 55 balls and Marsh remained unbeaten on 79 runs off 49 balls. This is the 5th highest partnership in the history of the IPL as of the 2024 season. Exactly a year later, on May 17, 2012, Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli became the 2nd duo to add 200+ runs in the IPL. The duo added 204* runs for the 2nd wicket partnership against the Delhi Daredevils.
