The year 2016 belonged to the Indian captain Virat Kohli. He performed tremendously in the IPL that year, continuing his purple patch from international cricket.

Kohli scored an unbelievable 973 runs in 16 innings, including seven half-centuries and four centuries, to set a benchmark in the tournament's history. With a strike rate of 152.03 and an average of 81.08, Kohli also smashed 83 fours and 38 sixes in IPL 2016.

He had his eyes set on lifting the trophy for the first time, but RCB were thwarted by SRH in the final.
